On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, and members of Alliance for Coney Island, I write to gratefully acknowledge your assistance to Coney Island after Superstorm Sandy and update you on the recovery work since.
With contributions from supporters like you, we are continuing to help the Coney Island community get back on its feet. In the immediate aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, we coordinated over 3,000 volunteers (including many of you!), assisted in the distribution of over 50,000 hot meals, and staged clean-ups in parks, beaches, and streets.
Today, we remember how much has been accomplished in the past year and how important resiliency is. Today, Mayor Bloomberg announced plans for a tidal barrier for Coney Island Creek. This project would protect residents from future floods and also connect Calvert Vaux Park to Kaiser Park. You can find more information on the proposal here: http://www1.nyc.gov/office-of-the-mayor/news/348-13/mayor-bloomberg-details-progress-resiliency-projects-outlined-the-city-s-long-term-plan-to/#/0
Accomplishments to date and Challenges still present in Coney Island one year after the Storm.
CONEY ISLAND, October 24, 2013 – Hurricane Sandy was a major test for the Coney Island community, but it also brought everyone together in ways it had never done so before. Since the Hurricane many milestones have been achieved in the road to recovery providing testament to the resiliency of the Coney Island community.
As Coney Island reflects on a year of unity, commitment, and resiliency, a program of community events has been planned to mark the one year anniversary since Sandy, along with all the accomplishments and challenges it represents.
