Collaborative Coney Island Statement Regarding the Unfortunate Event Surrounding the Jackie Robinson Statue

CONEY ISLAND, August 7, 2013 – As has been widely reported in local and national media, the statue of Jackie Robinson and teammate Pee Wee Reese, located at MCU Park on Surf Avenue, was vandalized with racist epithets.  The incident is under investigation by the local authorities.

The Alliance for Coney Island, along with local officials, community leaders, and business stakeholders, react with statements denouncing the incident.

“Coney Island is an incredibly diverse, historically-significant, and wonderfully eclectic Playground for all New Yorkers, as well as home to tens of thousands of residents from all walks of life.  We join others in the community in denouncing last night’s defacing of the Jackie Robinson statue, a source of pride in our neighborhood and a symbol of our Borough’s treasured history,” said Dennis Vourderis, Chairman of the Alliance for Coney Island.
