Winter Celebration Event raises funds for #Coney Recovers initiative benefiting Coney Island residents, businesses and non-profits affected by Hurricane Sandy
CONEY ISLAND, December 17, 2012 – Last Thursday night, the Alliance for Coney Island marked its official inauguration at the Winter Celebration Event which took place at Coney Island mainstay Gargiulo’s Restaurant. The event was attended by New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Borough President Marty Markowitz, Councilmember Domenic M. Recchia, Jr., Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, in addition to nearly 400 attendees made up of friends of Coney Island , area businesses, residents and local public entities, who all came together demonstrating their support to the Alliance for Coney Island and #ConeyRecovers. The event served as a fundraising opportunity for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, raising a total of $44,000 towards #ConeyRecovers. To date, through the Alliance’s #Coney Recovers initiative, nearly $200,000 has been raised for members of the Coney Island community affected by Hurricane Sandy.
Weeks before Hurricane Sandy, some of Coney Island’s key leaders reflected on the strides the historic neighborhood has made in the last few years. After Sandy, we are more committed than ever to making sure that Coney Island’s best days are ahead of it.
Over a month since Sandy struck our shores, the newly-formed Alliance for Coney Island is hosting a gathering for stakeholders in Coney Island to discuss immediate recovery efforts as well as it’s bright and prosperous future ahead. The Chairman of the Alliance and co-owner of Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park, Dennis Vourderis, will preside over the evening’s festivities.
Proceeds will go to #ConeyRecovers.
